the collaborative design workshop.
Design, planning, education and preservation.
Collab. | the Collaborative Design Workshop provides design, planning, educational and preservation services for public and private clients.
Drawing experience from the professions of architecture, planning, policy and historic preservation, Collab. works across disciplines to practice principles of design justice throughout our projects.
What does that mean? We cite as inspiration the Design Justice Network’s Framework and Principles, and BlackSpace’s Manifesto, below. Click on each image to learn more about the organization that produced it.
What we do
Design, Planning and Preservation
We work with clients to discuss design concepts and precedent, drawing on professional practices of architecture, development, preservation, participatory planning and advocacy to create a wide range of deliverables.
Tours, Teaching and Workshops
Individually and collaboratively, we lead participatory workshops, seminars, site visits and walking tours on a range of topics for student and professional audiences.
Writing, Illustration, and Documentation
We combine artistic practice with storytelling through writing and photography.
“Design is a tool and a method to infiltrate broken infrastructural pipelines that have been set in place. We hold the power to choose between design that harms and continues to divide us, and design that create spaces that will uplift, connect and distribute power to those who have been marginalized.”
– Kordae Henry
